Abstarct: The Kahovan copper deposit is located approximately 125 km southwest of Shahrood and 20 km southwest of Torud village. Tectonically, the area lies within the northern part of the Central Iran structural domain, in the Torud–Chah Shirin magmatic belt. The volcano–sedimentary succession of this belt comprises andesitic, dacitic, and basaltic lavas and tuffs, volcanic breccias, volcaniclastic rocks, tuffaceous sandstones, sandstones, shales, limestones, and marls of Middle Eocene age. Subvolcanic rhyodacitic and porphyritic andesitic intrusions, as well as dioritic, granitic, granodioritic, and monzonitic plutons, together with gabbroic and diabasic dikes of Late Eocene to Oligo–Miocene age, have been emplaced into the volcano–sedimentary sequence. The volcanic assemblages belong to the calc-alkaline magmatic series and were generated in a subduction-related volcanic arc setting. The ore-hosting lithologies mainly consist of basalt to basaltic andesite. The primary ore minerals identified in the deposit include chalcopyrite, chalcocite, and pyrite, whereas the supergene minerals consist of chalcocite, covellite, malachite, chrysocolla, azurite, hematite, goethite, and limonite. The dominant copper-bearing phase in the hypogene stage is primary chalcocite, while malachite and chrysocolla prevail in the supergene stage. Mineralization exhibits various textural and structural features, including vein–veinlet, brecciated, open-space filling, radiating, replacement, and disseminated textures; among these, vein–veinlet and replacement textures are the most abundant. Hydrothermal alteration is characterized by propylitic, chloritic, epidotic, argillic, zeolitic, silicic, and carbonatic assemblages. Geochemical data indicate copper as the principal element and silver as an accessory component. Copper exhibits a strong positive correlation with Au, Zn, Ni, Sr, As, and W. Sulfur isotope ratios of chalcocite range from –5.4‰ to –7.6‰. Integration of geological, geochemical, mineralogical, and alteration data, in comparison with other known deposits in Iran and worldwide, indicates that the Kahavan copper deposit most closely corresponds to the mantle-type copper deposit model.
