Abstarct: Daylight is a key factor in sustainable building design, significantly contributing to energy reduction and enhancing occupants' visual comfort. However, uncontrolled natural light penetration can lead to challenges such as glare and uneven light distribution within indoor spaces. One effective strategy for managing daylight is the use of light shelves, which reflect natural light deeper into the interior while reducing excessive brightness near windows. This study examines the impact of light shelves on daylight distribution through simulations conducted using the Ladybug plugin within the Grasshopper and Rhino environments. A building model was developed under specific climatic conditions, and key parameters of the light shelf—including depth, angle, and surface reflectivity—were evaluated. The analysis was baxsed on illuminance metrics. The results indicate that parametric simulation and optimization methods in Ladybug can effectively assist designers in determining the optimal light shelf specifications, thereby enhancing daylight performance in office and educational buildings. Within the scope of this study, the implementation of light shelves in the target studio resulted in a daylight increase ranging from 22% to 34%. Additionally, in scenarios where light reduction was necessary, the system successfully decreased light intensity by at least 50%. Future studies are recommended to explore the integration of light shelves with other daylight control systems, such as smart blinds or photovoltaic technologies, to further optimize daylight management in buildings.
