With the accelerating expansion of urbanization and the increase in the global population, environmental challenges such as food insecurity, water scarcity, air pollution, and the reduction of urban green spaces have become increasingly prominent. These issues underscore the necessity of adopting innovative approaches, such as urban agriculture, as a sustainable solution for the local production of food and the enhancement of urban life quality. This research, focusing on the capabilities of modular architecture, investigates how modular principles can be employed to create flexible and efficient structures within the urban context. The aim is to minimize adverse environmental impacts and promote sustainability, specifically by offering an architectural response for expanding urban agriculture on limited land.
The methodology of this research is baxsed on a Scoping Review, following the JBI 2020 protocol. It utilizes tools such as the PRISMA-ScR diagram for source screening, SWOT analysis for selecting cultivation methods, and scientometric analysis using VOSviewer software on data from the Scopus databaxse (2010–2025 for English sources) and Persian sources (2019–2025). This combined descxriptive-analytical approach, along with 3D design of modules baxsed on the VMC method (with dimensions of 10×2.5 meters), explores the relationships between keywords and extracts practical findings.
The findings indicate that modular architecture, by providing prefabricated, expandable, and recyclable bolt-together mextal modules, enables the creation of diverse forms for both vertical and horizontal cultivation in constrained urban spaces. This design facilitates transportation and arrangement while ensuring scalability, optimal use of space, adequate light and ventilation, and operational transparency. It represents an effective step towards enhancing food security, urban resilience, and environmental sustainability. This research constitutes a significant innovation at the intersection of modular architecture and urban agriculture, offering a potential model for future-oriented cities.
