This research aims to achieve an optimal climate-responsive architectural design pattern for vocational schools by investigating the impact of architectural variables on the annual energy consumption of buildings. Given rising energy costs and the need to enhance efficiency in educational spaces, optimizing early architectural design decisions has been considered as an effective strategy for reducing energy consumption.
In this study, the dormitory, workshop, and sports hall buildings of a vocational school were selected as the case study. Using energy simulation in DesignBuilder and EnergyPlus software, various design scenarios were evaluated, including building orientation, architectural form, length-to-width ratio, internal zoning, window-to-wall ratio, and roof covering type.
The simulation results showed that in the dormitory building, the optimal combination of form, functional zoning, and targeted adjustment of the window-to-wall ratio led to an approximate 15% reduction in annual energy consumption compared to the reference model. In the workshop buildings, adjusting the orientation and plan proportions resulted in approximately 6% reduction in energy consumption. Furthermore, in the workshops and the sports hall, the use of a double-pitched roof demonstrated better annual energy performance compared to other options.
The findings indicate that basic architectural decisions, prior to complex mechanical interventions, play a decisive role in reducing energy consumption in educational buildings, and the systematic use of energy simulation can guide the design process toward more informed and efficient choices.
