The tourism and sports sectors are among the most dynamic and significant contributors to economic growth, job creation, and sustainable development worldwide. Mashhad, as the second-largest city in Iran, benefits from exceptional religious, cultural, natural, and medical attractions, making it primarily recognized as a religious tourism hub. However, the city and its surrounding areas also possess substantial untapped potential for sports and wellness tourism. Activities such as mountaineering, rock climbing, mountain biking, motocross, caving, paragliding, and other nature-baxsed sports can significantly diversify the tourism portfolio of the region and attract visitors interested in adventure, nature, and health-oriented experiences. The development of sports and wellness tourism not only increases visitor numbers but also contributes to the local economy, creates employment across the eight main sectors of the tourism industry, promotes settlement in rural and highland areas, and mitigates migration to major urban centers. From a geographical perspective, Mashhad is situated in a plain bordered by the Binalud and Hezar-Masjed mountain ranges, with numerous valleys and watersheds that have historically supported rural and recreational settlements. This study focuses on the living experience and quality of stay in mountainous natural environments, emphasizing scenic landscapes, recreational opportunities, and physical activity. Moreover, the design and implementation of mountain lodges and wellness-oriented accommodations can enhance both physical and mental well-being, strengthen sustainable regional development, and provide innovative architectural responses to the evolving needs of tourism in Mashhad and its surrounding areas.
