The base of the university named the Institute of Mining was founded in Shahrood, a city with a historical cultural Islamic background, in 1973 and was invested and managed by the private sector. It had only one associate program called coal excavation.
In 1982, the institute came under the supervision of the ministry of higher education. It was renamed as the center for Shahrood Institute of higher education in 1987 after the bachelor programs of mining engineering and associate programs of civil service and electricity were setup. After considerable attempts by the authorities of the ministry and gaining the required permissions in 1997, the institute was promoted to Shahrood University by the consent of the Development Council of Ministry headed by Dr. Moeen. Finally, thanks to the efforts and pursuit of university president and the staff at the time and the expansion of different programs and the development of post-graduate levels, another great achievement was gained for the university in that the Development Council of the ministry in a session dated 2002/6/9 announced his agreement with the promotion of the university to Shahrood University of technology. At present, the university having 5000 students provides the annual admission of more than 750 students to study in 32 programs and various fields of study in bachelor, master and Ph.D. levels.
The significant achievements of the university from 1997 up to now are as following:

According to this program approved by the Council of Development in session dated 2002/9/16 and due to the potentials of the university, the number of programs will increase to 93 by the end of the Nation Fourth Program of Development.
